Entrevue - Paul Robinson

Hi Paul.  Thank you for your time and your answers.

Tell me about you and your past.

I started climbing at the age of
eleven in new jersey and have been at it ever since. I began in a
small climbing gym and eventually branched off to where i live today
in Boulder, Colorado.


What model and brand was your 1st climbing shoes?

5.10 Mocassym

What is the best place in the world for bouldering?

South Africa, Rocklands

In how many country did you go to climb?

5 countries so far

Where and why did you start climbing?

In NJ, I went to birthday party at the age of eleven and loved it. I have been addicted ever since.

Have you ever take part of Climbing World Cup?

Yes in two bouldering world cups in vail colorado. I got 3rd place in one and 4th in the
other.

What do you think about bouldering as sport in Olympic Games?

I think that it would be amazing and i would love to compete in one in the
future!

Do you often climb in gym?

Yes, i climb in the gym all the time because i feel that it is the best place to get strong.

Did you ever train for a specific project?

No, i just train and climb.  I feel that training will get you strong enough to do your project.

Who do you admire?

My father who fought cancer for 20 years and is the strongest person i have ever come in contact with in my life.

What was the last book you read?

I am reading “the happy isles of oceania” right now

What music do you listen?

I listen to mainly rap and hip hop music

What do you think about solo climbing?

I would never do it. It is beyond selfish and puts your life into danger which is something i am
not willing to put myself or my family through.

 


 

At what height it begins to be a highball?

A highball for me is a climb that makes you think more about the fall
than the climb in front of me.

Was your progression fast or does it takes years?

It took many years.  In the beginning i was a very bad climber but as time went on i
learned my body, gained muscle, and became the climber i am today.

Did you take part of a specific training to help your progression?

Just climbing in the gym has helped me enormously.

What do you like to eat?

I try to be healthy but it does not always work. I eat cereal for breakfast, sandwich for lunch and try and stay
away from pizza for dinner. My girlfriend cooks me amazing meals which
i absolutely love.

What is your best meal in a crag?

Peanut butter and honey sandwich

Do you plan to climb all your life?

Yes i do

After Sharma, Nicole and Lamiche, would you like to design a climbing
shoe?

Yes and i have. The new team five ten is amazing and i am glad
to have been the designer of the shoe.

 



Have you ever shape holds?

Yes but none that were ever produced.

What is the "bad-ass" place to climb?

Switzerland

What is the best developments in climbing history?

I would say chalk and the furthering of climbing shoe development has made the biggest
strides in our climbing. Crash pads have helped a lot too.

What item you don't want to forget to put in your bag before leaving
to the crag?

Besides my climbing gear, food and water for the day. I hate when i forget to bring enough food.

What is the best climbing DVD?

Dosage V

Cookies

Beer or wine?

Neither

Do you consider yourself as a pro climber?

Yes

What is your graduation status?

I will be done school in 10 months!!!
then it is off to europe to live and climb!

Crimps, slopes or pinch?

Crimps

Describe a memorable moment in you climbing experience.

I would say that sending jade for me was a memorable experience. It was raining
and i knew it was my last effort of the day because i had no skin
left. I went for it despite the pain and rain and just sent it! It was
an amazing feeling.

What else than climbing do you like to do?

Painting. That is my major in school and i love to paint almost as much as i like to climb.

Any advises or suggestions?

Don't give up and dont let go!
